JUNIOR YEAR: WEEK TWENTY-NINE

Grace Pittman March 21, 2018

Hi there! I currently feel like I should congratulate myself on returning to the blog (Haha!).  Now that I am back, I feel like I am returning to unexplored territory. But seriously, there is a dilemma that I must explain for you to understand my statement and connection. But before I begin my explanation, welcome back to the blog as well! Thanks for tuning in.

So, I don’t think there is anything more frustrating than a computer or computer software that updates automatically. Furthermore, a software that implements an update to correct “glitches”, but also discontinues one of the most important sites that I use. You guessed it, in the blaze of fire that promised to correct this laptop’s glitches, this site burned with them. I accessed it fine over spring break from home. However, one day last week, late at night, I was so exhausted that I barely noticed the self-update notification. I am fairly certain I still accessed the site fine after the update.

Now that I am using my apartment’s WI-FI, the site will not load. I have tried different troubleshooting techniques (I even uninstalled the latest security update, which I thought might have put a nice target on this website’s back.), but I still cannot access it from my apartment. Therefore, I am unsure what is really to blame here. I contacted Squarespace’s customer care via email, and communication has been a hassle. At this point, you might be wondering how you are currently reading this if it would seem as if all hope is lost.

Well, my friend, I am currently waiting on my political science club meeting in my building on campus and using the university’s WI-FI as I type this. In fact, I think I actually smiled too hard when I initially pulled this site up with relative ease. (I crossed my fingers and said a prayer…) Needless to say, I might be typing my thoughts and posting earlier than expected or scheduling the post to appear on Friday.

Dilemma now explained, if I could describe my spring break with a single word, it would be: Lazy. I think I slept more than I have in ages. And that is a good thing. Unfortunately, I wish that I had accomplished more (There is always more to be done), but I used spring break as a time for meditation and reflection, which is highly uncharacteristic of college students. My meditation and reflection came in handy with my research topic—which paid off immensely. Sometimes doing less is doing more for yourself.

This week went eerily well. Not that I dream of a week from Dante’s Inferno, but it is rare when things run smoothly in college. Calling it a win! I have been grappling with this research topic (I have only had about a hundred), but the last one was really promising (And my favorite.). However, the data…not so much. I talked to a professor this week on how she develops her research topics, and she equated the process to trial and error. That sums up my experience. I have, yet again, established another topic. Fortunately, this one works 100%, and I have woven aspects of my favorite research topic into it. I am relieved and gladdened at this point. The first stage is finalizing. Finally.

I don’t know if it is because I am getting older or that I just love squash, but I went to the grocery store this week and did not shed a single tear when I discovered that I spent $7 on squashes. Food is happiness, squash is more happiness. Last Friday, I purchased a lens hood for my camera to cut the glare, and I pray this is the cure-all, end-all that my camera needs for sunny days. It arrived today, and I am thrilled to try it out.

I will not be doing much this weekend but hanging out in my room and doing homework, reading journal articles, studying for GRE/LSAT, and waiting for the latest episodes of my favorite shows on TV these days. Perhaps the show I am most excited for is the final episode of The Alienist. Oh my gosh. I highly recommend this limited series. It is an absolute nail-biter. I have yet to determine whether the culprit will be a character that frequents the show or if he will be someone viewers have never seen. I am literally waiting for Monday. Super excited here. Finally, I hope you have a bright weekend and make up for the lost hour of sleep!

P.S. On when to expect next week’s post, excellent question. However, there will be something.

The Waiting Game.
Jan 29, 2019

I returned from my 36-hour stint in Austin two weekends ago, and I struggled to get into the groove of the new and final semester. Currently, I am semi-caught up, which was a huge obstacle (along with the terror in presenting at a major conference), but my new concern involves a constant check-in with my emails. I want to know…but, then again, I do not want to know.
